Petites nouvelles et autres remarques sur Waterloo

Bon, mon appartement est un peu plus meublé depuis hier: une table avec quatre chaise, une table de chevet, un lit et un sofa se sont ajoutés au bureau et à l'unique chaise que j'avais depuis vendredi. Et les livreurs de The Brick sont des cons certifiés. En retard, zéro courtoisie, apportent le lit dans la chambre et le sofa dans le salon, font signer le formulaire et décrissent. Il pleuvait beaucoup hier, le sommier, malgré le fait d'être emballé dans un plastique supposément imperméable, était mouillé et quelque peu sale sur le côté qui a sûrement trainé par terre. Et l'installation n'étant pas comprise, j'ai dû déballé tout ça et monté le lit moi-même. La prochaine fois, j'achèterai tout chez Big Bill's Comfort Plus Furniture and Mattresses. La livraison n'était pas gratuite, mais les livreurs étaient fins et prenaient soin de la marchandise. Malheureusement, j'aurai à dealer avec les cons de The Brick encore quand le reste de mon mobilier de salon va venir à la fin du mois. Ah, si au moins il y avait un Gagnon Frères à Waterloo...

Il me reste encore à me procurer le câble et internet à la maison, ainsi qu'à faire assurer tout ça. J'ai hâte d'être complètement installé.

Anyway, après maintenant deux semaines ici, je dois admettre que malgré la plus grande population de Kitchener-Waterloo, c'est plus rural qu'à Chicoutimi. Je n'ai jamais vu autant de gibier, pardon, d'animaux sauvages dans un coin supposément habité. Depuis mon arrivée, j'ai vu un lapin, un renard, un rat musqué ou autre rongeur semi-aquatique, des dizaines d'écureuils et un ou deux suisses (tamias rayés pour les Suisses), et de nombreux oiseaux incluant les sempiternelles outardes qui ne migrent pas (preuve qu'il n'y a pas d'hiver dans le sud de l'Ontario, malgré la neige fondante la semaine dernière), des canards et des rapaces (crécerelles ou éperviers). Il faut dire qu'autour de Waterloo c'est des champs et des fermes, alors qu'à Chicout, on tombe sur du bois (et ensuite, de la coupe à blanc, mais je ne me suis pas aventuré dans ces recoins de désolation).

Côté travail, j'ai réussi à connecter mon Linux au réseau sans fil de l'université (merci petit frère), par conséquent je peux techniquement me remettre à la recherche. Mais mon superviseur est occupé cette semaine et part en conférence à Rome la semaine prochaine. Je vais problement just lire et imprimer des articles pendant ce temps...

Well, my apartment is now more furnished since yesterday. A table with four chairs, a night table, a queen-sized bed and a "chair" (one-seat couch) have been added to the desk and chair
I had since Friday. And the delivery guys from The Brick are certified assholes. More than an hour late, no courtesy, they bring the bed frame, box spring and mattress to the bedroom and the chair to the living room, make me sign the forms and leave. Despite being wrapped in (dirty) plastic, the box spring came in wet and dirty on one side (it was raining a lot yesterday, they probably dragged it on the ground). And as installation was not included I was left to do it all myself, with the minimal instructions on the box to set up the bed frame (nothing close to the nicely organized desk assembly Ms C and I did on Friday). Next time I'll buy everything from Big Bill's Comfort Plus Furniture and Mattresses. Their delivery people are nice and take good care of the merchandise. Unfortunately I'll have to deal with The Brick's pricks again when the rest of my living room set arrives at the end of the month. If only there was a Gagnon Frères in Waterloo...

I still have to get cable and internet in my apartment and get insurance for all that stuff I now possess. I can't wait to be completely settled.

Anyway, after two weeks here I've realized that despite having more population, Kitchener-Waterloo is actually more rural than Chicoutimi. I have never seen as much wildlife in a supposedly inhabited area. Since I got here, I've seen one rabbit, one fox, one muskrat or other semiaquatic vermin, dozens of squirrels and a couple of chipmunks, and tons of birds, including the ever present Canada geese (that don't migrate, proving there is no winter in southern Ontario, despite the wet snow we got last week), ducks and hawks. Admittedly, Waterloo is surrounded by farmland, while Chicout is surrounded by forest (and then clear cut areas, but I've never ventured into those desolate places).

Work-wise, I now managed to get my Linux OS connected to the net at school (thank you Andrew), so I can finally go back to doing research. But my supervisor is busy this week and going to Rome for a conference next week so I guess I'll just be reading articles in the meantime...
